“With no particular personal twist on it, you are less likely to be remembered”-Lyndsay Adler “It takes time to figure out, but it makes all the difference from good to great”-Lyndsay Adler “Value yourself and your time”-Lyndsay Adler |
Who is Lyndsay Adler?
Lyndsay Adler is a well respected American photographer and photographic educator, based in New York. Born 17th September 1985, the fashion photographer creates memorable and experimental images, creating her legacy in the world of photography. Lyndsay is inspired by other photographers and artists but also films and museums. Lyndsay focuses on empowering her models and creating a strong yet elegant image that have a great impact on the viewer. Adler is quite experimental with her shoots and feels that there is no "right way to do it", her inspiration and empowerment is reflected in her work creating a story telling element. |
Lyndsay Adler starts a shoot by coming up with a story to help enhance the image and element of story telling. In this image Adler is conveying a woman coming out of a night club and glancing at her reflection in the glowing neon lights. This image uses low light photography to capture the desired mood and dramatic effect. In this image pink and cyan coloured lights, along with a white light is used to help highlight and contrast certain parts of the face. To further add to the dramatic effect, Adler chose to have the model wear darker makeup and have slick hair creating a more sultry look.
|
In this part of the video we see how Adler intends to set up her shoot and the desired effect she wants to create.
|
Here we see how Adler is directing the shoot and guiding her model to create flattering final images.
|
Here we see the equipment that Adler uses to create this image. This includes mirrored plexiglass and colour gels.
|
For this shoot, an important part of it is the models hair, makeup and nails in this instance it is quite bold, bright and fun which adds to the overall upbeat and playful atmosphere of the images. Another important part of this shoot is the props, which are coloured semi-transparent acrylic shapes. These were used to create shadows on the models faces, highlighting and framing certain parts of the face, particularly taking close up images involving the hands as well. In this shoot a variety of models are used which creates a range of unique images.
|
During this shoot, I was able to explore the portraiture and identity theme in more depth while using more props and different lighting that I hadn't used before, which allowed me to be more experimental. The props I used were a Canon 4000d DSLR camera, coloured LED lights, a mirror and a spray bottle to apply the water on the mirror. I feel that my strengths in this shoot where that I created my desired mood, I wanted it to be quite ambient and portray the idea of reflection and identity. I also like how part of the models face is emphasised by the brighter light and the other part has a more sultry effect due to the darker blue lighting. On the other hand, I feel that I could further improve the image by making the model stand out even more, for example making sure the make up was extremely bright and glowy, especially where the light hits her face. I would do this to emphasise the model even more and to add a more dreamy atmosphere so that it would contrast with the darker parts of the image and be more impactful.

" I take inspiration from my own personal experience and observation of how, in other cultures, bodies themselves are treated as living graphic symbols." - Maurizio Anzeri
why this quote?
I chose this quote because it typifies what this artist want to portray through his work and you can understand this artists perspective, how he wants to embody personal experience intertwined with other cultures. |
who is this artist?
Maurizio Anzeri born in 1969 is an Italian artist , who embroiders his work to enhance and distort his images. His images are often distorted images of serious looking school children or sophisticated looking adults. He also used synthetic hair and coloured threads in his work and these were often over the top of the peoples faces to distort their expression. why this artist? I am taking inspiration from this artist because of his use of physical editing, particularly by sewing or embroidering over the top of images. This is a good introduction to physical editing as it incorporates two simplistic techniques yet the high level of detail is what really makes these images unique. |
"I like money in its shredded state because it is stripped of value and power"- Lisa Kokin
why this quote?
I chose this quote because it typifies how Lisa Kokin uses the old fashioned images which once had a previous meaning, and how Kokin strip them back to create a whole other meaning or feeling associated with them. Relating to how she enjoys money in its shredded state because it is powerless. |
who is this artist?
Lisa Kokin born in 1954 is a mixed media artist, with textiles being her main media that she chooses to use and memories, history and nostalgia being the focal point of her work. Kokin also uses threads and sewing needles/ machines much a like Anzeri to physically edit her work by connecting and sewing on top of things. why this artist? I am taking inspiration from this artist also because of her use of physical editing. Lisa Kokin uses faces often from old fashioned images, similar to how Anzeri uses images as well, however, instead of distorting them she uses the thread to represent families and peoples personal connections or a shared group feeling. |
" I think beauty is like love...if you love something or someone it becomes beautiful" - Marc Lamey
why this quote?
I chose this quote as it typifies how Lamey focuses on women's beauty and his passion behind each of the images. This quote reminds the viewers that he has focus of capturing small elements of society, many of his images incorporate insects such as butterflies and beetles and these are often positioned on or over the models mouth representing how women often have their voice taken away in society. |
who is this artist?
Marc Lamey is a French photographer, known for his portraiture and fashion photography often having a woman as his subject and exploring their beauty and different meanings through symbolism. He also often includes cityscape into his work creating an urban and modern feel to his images. Lamey has also stated that he takes a strong influence from music for his images. why this artist? I am taking inspiration from this artist as his portraiture often includes props incorporated into the models face which I personally like the look of and thinks that it creates captivating images. In addition, his images have an overall sense of femininity created by the bright pops of colour and moody and elegant atmosphere. This is something that I wish to emulate in future work as I feel that it is a very impactful technique; the way he uses props and colour to captivate the viewer. |
" Be who you are and what you are"- Jessica Tremp
why this quote?
I chose this quote as it captures the very raw and natural atmosphere in Jessica Tremp's images. In addition, Tremp often incorporates the models in a bare form; their skin is often showing further reflecting the overalll natural feeling. |
who is this artist? Jessica Tremp is a photographer based in Melbourne, Australia, born in 1981, Tremp has taken some very striking portraiture images, which often involves various elements of nature and the model is usually surrounded and embracing the props around them. why this artist? I am taking inspiration from this artist as her use of nature is very interesting and unique, Tremp often surrounds the model, creating an almost cosy yet unsettling feeling, the warm colour palette contrasting with the cooler natural surrounding help create this feeling. Furthermore, I find the way she composes her images very intriguing, the models often have a far gaze, looking past the camera and they pictures have a very candid and natural feel to them. |
" When you come into my pieces, it's not an intellectual experience, it's a physical experience. It's coming at your body. There's light, there's sound..."- Bill Viola

Bill Viola born in 1951 is an American video artist that focuses on fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects of everyday human life and interactions. Bill Viola is most well known for one of his works called the Ascension which is a very eye catching piece involving water and a very electric, vibrant blue which helps to captivate the viewer. why this artist? I chose this artist so I can explore a range of unique compositions and an artist that incorporates sound and motion to create an immersive experience for the viewer. Although, Bill Viola is a video artist I still feel that he is very inspirational as his use of composition, colour and contrast is very interesting and visually impactful why this quote? "Children as the subject of my photos appeared with their coming into the world. They were and are the cause, they determine the choice of subject of my photos."- Magdalena Berny
who is this artist?
Magdalena Berny is a self-taught photographer based in Poland and has managed to establish her own distinct style. Berny specialises in photographing children, family and portraits and many of her works have been published in poland and abroad. why this artist? I chose to research this artist as her distinct style portrays a very eerie and spaced out atmosphere yet a very dreamy and fairytale like quality is also present, particularly in her images that have children as the subject. Furthermore, I admire how Berny uses space, form and light to create the distinct atmosphere that is very prominent in her pieces. I think that her work would be very interesting and experimental to emulate. |
"Although my work is dark and serious, there is a childish, playful naivety and innocence about it,"- Alma Haser
